This painting was inspired by the medieval Spanish legend of the Visigothic King Roderick's love for a young noblewoman named Florinda and the consequences which result from this love. The background landscape is a scene from the Guadalupe river in the Texas Hill Country, which I visited last summer. I chose this landscape due to its resemblance to the area surrounding the Tajo River near Toledo, where the legend takes place.
